From “WHAT to learn” to “HOW to learn”

Shoot Questions, Bomb You with Big Questions

Preview: In former Social Studies classes, teachers usually asked students what they found, what they knew, what they thought and what they learnt after introducing the material and resources of the unit. With these study steps followed one then another, students could update their knowledge, develop their sourcing skills and broaden their understanding through class discussions and group assignments. Isn’t it an ideal class in the traditional learning expectation? Yes, but we want more.

At the start of this class, the teacher emphasized the significance of the unit. Then he threw us a question, “What is the difference between knowledge and thinking?”

After a period of silence, students responded by guessing:

‘Knowledge is always right but thinking could be wrong. “Really, are you sure?

“Knowledge comes out of thinking and knowledge is written thinking. “

“Knowledge is one type of thinking but it will not happen reversely. “

“knowledge is from outside and thinking is more internal. “

              …….

At one question, social studies class have been changed into philosophy……

Then the teacher followed up with: “As you may agree that knowledge is mostly given. At my young age when there was no internet and books were limited, teachers were the main source of knowledge. But currently there is plenty of knowledge available online, why do we still need teachers? “

Really, teachers, shall you ask this question at class?

Dear teacher, how could you ask such questions? Haven’t you seen our innocent eyes?

The teacher tipped students by providing a story of two people going for a job interview. The first person could answer the question out of his memory, fast and accurately. The second person provided an estimated answer after trying some method.

Now teacher asked students:” Who are you going to hire if you are the interviewer? why?”

All students agreed to hire the second one since he could use what he knew, which is a more important skill.

Using Knowledge. That is exactly the core part of this unit, as well as what teachers could equip students with, the Thinking Skill.

              So HOW TO THINK?

              HOW TO THINK??!!

Looking around, yes, we are seated around teenagers, no wrinkles or sophisticated eyes. We are still at Maple Leaf class, not anywhere in the academy study center or university seminars.

The Entering Level of Thinking: Find the Evidence

              +++++++++++++++++++++++

              实践一:会说话的图片

              Practice One: The Speaking Pictures

              看到一张图片,以往也许对我们来说这就是一张图片,但是现在老师会问:“你认为这个图片是什么时候在哪里拍的啊?为什么这么认为,有哪些依据?”于是,学生们不再关注图片美不美观,而是仔细观察,通过光影、背景、人物衣着等等,结合自己以往的常识,回答和分辨出时间、地点、年代、当时的场景甚至人物情绪等。(具体问与答在此省略。)

              这不就是我们很熟悉的调查、研究、归纳与总结吗? 居然成了思考入门级? 为什么是入门级?

Having some pictures in front, instead of beauty and resolution, what teachers want students to be concerned about is what the pictures could tell us. From the color, the shade, the clothing, the people and the content, many details of the pictures are exposing information to us. Search, study, analysis and conclusion, isn’t it the procedure that we have been familiar with when studying? Why this has become enter level thinking?

Knowledge is process, but we always value it as answers.
