              Series Report SS Two

Never Too Many Questions To Ask

Preview: In Social Studies, we start to focus on thinking skill rather than knowledge intake, The teacher proposed a big question, how to think properly?

Do you want to take a guess about how many Q and A activities are there in this part? If you get lost in the question ocean, no panic, many lovely Maple Leaf students are struggling in company. Ready to jump in the thinking mine? Take a breath, and, go!

Foundation Level of Thinking: The Reliable Evidence

              *******************************************

              Practice: The Silent Trace

Think about ourselves, what kind of traces have we left in our daily life? The wechat post, the conversation history, our academic record at school, the written journal, the activity log, the experience we create with classmates, and the impression we give to teachers, friends and family …… All these puzzle pieces collected together could assemble a profile of us,

But is it a full image of us Has anything happened without leaving no evidence or unreal trace? Have we ever smiled to the camera when feeling depressed inside? Have we even been told two stories of the same events from opposite sides?

Nod, nod, nod….

The same rule applies to the history. How could we know what really happened in the past? How can we get close to the truth?

The reliable evidence? Exactly, but how do we tell which is more trustworthy than others? Could you believe in what you find online? How about the information you get from teachers or textbooks? No, no, do not always take what teachers say for certainty. You need to collect and compare the source. So how to compare?

Teacher, you just like questions, love giving question, enjoy firing off questions, don’t you? )

The Intermediate Level of Thinking: To Know Different Types of Information

              &&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&

              实践三: “我感觉”和“大数据显示”

Practice: I Think and What the Number Shows

What makes these two questions different?

What is your favourite ice cream?

What is the favourite ice cream?

The first question could be answered based on your personal feeling while the second one has to be done after certain survey. This is the difference between subjective and objective, which we need to be aware of when revising the source. There are also original source and second-handed source distinct of different timelines. All these will help us to survive of the bias.

Teacher, do you see the tornado in our heads?  )

              Practice: The Inevitable Bias

              …………………………………

Which of the following are original source and which are subjective ones?

According to a letter from a soldier in WWII,…….

According to a documentary finished in 1950, ….

Asian children are strong in Math.

As one survey suggested, Asian children have performed better in Math average than other countries.

All above is easy to answer except the tricky one, the last question. It sounds objective but it is still a subjective statement. Many messages remain unclear in this sentence, like what survey or how big is the subject body. Furthermore, why has this message been picked up but others? Is it possible that my bias led me to pay closer attention to this in the ocean of texts?

So bias lives in every statement. Bias fools us from time to time.

All of sudden, I question all I have seen online.

We have come to the Intermediate Level of Thinking. The extreme goal is one step away, right?  No, no, no, hold your laughter, it is still too early. See you in a bit.
