High or Low, who is Deciding the Grade?

              Student Self-assessment in BC curriculum

Speaking of grades, this is the first image coming into head: teachers concentrate in the arm dance on their desks; with their decisive strokes on the paper, students’ fate is determined.

This image is too familiar with us. Therefore when we are witnessing the grade negotiation happening in BC classes, we almost doubt the famous saying” seeing is believing.”

Actually, under the new BC curriculum, such circumstances are nearly happening in every class. In order to foster children’s 6 core competencies, school is encouraging student self-assessment to realize the educational goals of students’ personal awareness and critical thinking.

What is self-assessment? Does it merely mean students decide what scores they are receiving totally? Of course, not. A systematic plan has been designed to guarantee a rational outcome. To fulfill the meanings of student assessment, both students and teachers are required to devote their time and energy in a great scale.

Let us raise an example in geography class. The project is like this:

              Plate Tectonics Map Project

Create your own fictional world including your continents, oceans, tectonic plates, mountains, earthquakes, volcanoes, and other evidence of dynamic earth. Your world will have its own fictional history that explains the location of detailed features. You will create a MAP that illustrates all of the features of your world. You will be graded highly on your creativity and effort. Eventually, you will grade yourself in accordance to the rubrics like follows (only partly shown here):

Have you noticed the trick here? The grading areas consist of both student’s and teacher’s marks, which will take up different proportions of final marks. At evaluating the project, students will acquire the reflection from two perspectives, themselves and teachers, which will allow students to be better aware of themselves and discover their strength, as well as their shortcomings.

I know you would ask, what if there is an obvious gap between the grades given by students and teachers?  First, if students take this self-assessment sincerely, they tend to agree with teachers’ opinions. Second, if students insist on their  judgements, they will be given chances after class to debate with teachers. As long as students can persuade teachers with evidences, their grade could be adjusted. In aim of changing teachers’ ideas, students have to go through every step of the process, which will provide them a chance to review the content and work on the communication. As such, another chance of learning is happening. Grading rubrics are usually given to students at the beginning of the project, which will work as guidance for students in their preparation.

The wonderful exploration journey to ourselves and the world is hard to illustrate by words. Our students are learning from their personal experience on a daily basis. Are you interested in and thinking about an opportunity to see it for yourself?
