              1.  What is Science Fair? 什么是科学展?

              The science fair is an inquiry project that engages students in investigating and devising an experiment that follows the scientific method, to seek and analyze answers through data collection and interpretation. Students are able to exercise their critical thinking, creative thinking, problem-solving, personal responsibility, and communication skills as they embark on this semester-long journey.

              科学展览是一个探究性的项目,让学生按照科学的方法进行调查和设计实验,通过数据收集和解释来寻找和分析答案。在这学期的学习过程中,学生能够锻炼他们的批判性思维、创造性思维、解决问题的能力、个人责任感和沟通能力。

              2.  How is the science fair scaffolded to help the students with this inquiry project? 科学展是怎么一步步帮助学生完成这个探究性项目的?

              The science fair is separated into several stages throughout the semester to balance the work load so that students can manage their time more effectively and learn about their chosen topic throughout the semester. Students are allowed to work in groups or individually for this project. Here are some of the major milestones covered during the semester:

              科学展在整个学期分为几个阶段,以此让学生们在整个项目阶段内有效平衡自己的工作任务,并更有效地管理自己的时间。学生可以选择通过小组合作或独自完成整个项目任务。一些重要的阶段任务包括:

              l  Proposal: Students submit their proposed topic and research to the teacher for formative feedback. Then they have the opportunity to gain peer feedback and use the teacher’s feedback to submit their final proposal for marks.

              实验项目提议:学生向老师提交他们想要进行的主题和研究,并获得教师的项目形成性反馈。之后学生们将有机会征得同学们的意见反馈,并利用老师的反馈提交最终的项目提案。此提案将有成绩打分。

              l  Jigsaw Puzzle: Students present their topic and experiment proposal to their peers. Their peers ask questions and critically assess how the project could be improved.

              Experiments Implementation.

              l  Analysis: Following the experiment, students submit the results, discussion, and conclusion individually to ensure all students are capable of interpreting the results and drawing conclusions from them.

              l  Class Presentations: Students present their project to the class. The classmates are given another opportunity to ask critically question the presenters. This is a mini simulation of what it looks like when science students are defending their thesis in university.

              l  Gallery Walk: Students get to walk around the class to pick which project should go to the campus wide science fair by observing the poster contents and critically analyzing the quality of the scientific work.

              l  Campus Wide Science Fair: The best projects are selected from each science class and those students get to present their work at the campus wide science fair organized by the Science Department. Students are able to interact with elementary, middle and high school students, as well as teachers, parents and community members where the science students explain their project and real-world implications.

              l  Reflections: Students are asked to reflect on their efforts, team work, and learning from the science fair projects. They are also asked for feedback on how the science fair project could improve.

              反思: 要求学生就自己的科学项目的整体工作进行反思,包括反思自己的努力,团队合作以及从科学展项目研究中学习到了什么。他们还需要就科学展组织提供改进和反馈意见。

              l  Rubrics: Each assessment has a rubric that clearly outlines what students require to reach the “Excellent level. This way all of our science teachers can feel comfortable assessing the students without bias. Furthermore, students know exactly what the requirements are for this project.

              1.  越高年级,他们的实验项目标题中我们不熟悉的名词越多,当然吗,他们的知识范围和理解在不断提升啦。

              2.  越高年级,他们的实验项目内容越贴近我们的生活,也就是实验从知识验证慢慢提升到实际应用性指导,即科学的探索和实用性原则。

              3.  越高年级,他们的实验项目标题中问号频率越高,即从对知识的印证慢慢过渡到自我思考。

              Do you see certain trends from the list?

              1.  The more advanced grade level, the more science terms are shown in the titles. Of course, they have learnt more knowledge and skills.

              2.  The more advanced grade level, the topics are more related to our daily life, which presents a science learning process that is to transform from knowledge recognition to actual application.

              3.  The more advanced grade level, the more questions marks are seen in the title, which demonstrate how our students have developed from knowledge intake to independent thinking.

              到底各个实验项目都是什么意思呢?选一个简单的来谈谈吧。我们就选高一的洗甲水项目吧。

              学生们先确定了洗甲水中三种通用成分:,乙酸乙酯,丙酮,甲醛。 他们分别测验了三种成分的洗甲效果,发现丙酮效果最好。(所有实验数据和结果现场有照片,可惜当时听的太认真,忘记照相了)。

              于是学生提问:为什么洗甲水中不单单只用丙酮呢? 经过搜索,发现丙酮有很大的毒性,对皮肤和人体都易造成很大的危害。但是使用丙酮和乙酸乙酯及甲醛融合后的液体洗刷指甲时,后两种液体就能形成一定皮肤隔离,从而降低丙酮对人体造成的伤害。

              这个项目虽然简单,但是我高一的时候真的没有想过这个问题,更别说设计一个实验来发现这个问题了。惭愧……

               

              Why is the science fair a semester-long project?

              你问为什么我们要用一个学期的时间来进行科学展项目?

              ML Science Fair is a semester-long project, worth 10% of the science course final mark. Research indicates that when “science fair projects are viewed as long-term projects rather than as extra-curricular activities conducted in a short period of time, the gain in content knowledge is bound to dramatically increase (Miller, 2016, p. 51). Furthermore, Marsa (1993) found that teachers guiding and mentoring of students was a key ingredient to student success according to a longitudinal study conducted on Science Talent Search participants. Foxx (2001) explains the creation of science fair projects allows students to create their own autonomous body of knowledge on a particular topic of interest much like actual scientists do in the workplace (p. 3).
